The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ meaning to bind, join, attach, to direct and concentrate one’s attention on, to use and apply. It also means union or communion. This can also be thought as personal consciousness connecting with the global one. It is the true union of our will with the will of God, it means the disciplining of the intellect, mind, the emotions and the will; it means a balance and poise of the soul which enables one to look at life in all its aspects evenly.
Yoga is one of the six orthodox systems of Indian Philosophy. It was collated, coordinated and systematized by Sage Patanjali in his classical work, the Yoga Sutras.
The root cause of the physical, mental, and emotional conflicts which we experience today in our lives is disharmony and imbalance. Yoga shows us the path and as a means to eliminate the areas of disharmony and imbalance.
When the restlessness of mind, intellect and self is stilled through the practice of Yoga, the yogi finds the inner bliss and peace by the grace of spirit within him. He relishes the fruits of Yoga. The eternal Joy experienced is beyond the reasoning of the mind and intellect. He has found the biggest treasure and he needs nothing more than this. He who has achieved it, shall not be moved by the greatest sorrows.
Bhagwad Gita also gives other explanation of the Yoga and emphasizes upon Karma Yoga (Yoga by action). It teaches: ‘Work alone is your privilege, never the fruits thereof. Never let the fruits of the action be your motive and never cease to work. Work in the name of the God, abandoning all the selfish desires would surely be worth. Be not affected by the Success and failure. Be unaffected and poised in the practice of Yoga.
Yoga has been described as wisdom in work and skill full living leading to peace and harmony.
